Week Two & Three Training #10YearsRunning #PGHMarathon

I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.' – Muhammad Ali

Every time I have a rough week or training does not go as I plan it this quote by Muhammad Ali always comes to mind. Training for a marathon has been one of the best things I have ever done for myself. It has given me a purpose. It has been difficult, physically and mentally, but in the end, it will be worth it.

On Saturday January 6th you will see that I completed an hour long kickboxing class. I took a similar class in Las Vegas when I lived there with my friend Angela and we loved it. It was a great way to get a total body workout. I may be training for a marathon, but I cannot forget that strength training is just as important as any training run I complete. Plus, it helps break up my training and keep things from getting monotonous.

Here is my best suggestion when taking a class like this. Try it our for free. Most gyms, as did this one, will offer a free session in the hopes that you will join their facility. I went into to this thinking I was probably going to switch at some point but there is no shame in taking a few free classes at different places to see what you like. Not every workout is for everyone and the key is to try out the options you have until you find what works. Most have equipment that is free to use (such as boxing gloves). I used my own but ended up having the wrong style gloves for the class, which they did tell me. I used my own anyway since I used them before with no issues. I should have listed to my trainer and I paid the price with some nasty looking wounds and swelling, especially on my right hand. So, the lesson is, trust your trainers!

I am running under Team Lemieux and will be actively fundraising for them over the next six months. The Mario Lemieux Foundation is dedicated to raising funds for cancer research and patient care, as well as Austin’s Playrooms, an initiative that creates playrooms for children and families in medical facilities. To learn more, visit my fundraising page and help me reach my goal of $1500 by race day! I believe in connecting fitness and community service, so this partnership will be a major component to what I plan over the next few months.

Want to be a part of this race? Use my coupon code (ZEHNERDSGPM18) which is good for $10 off registration for the full, half or relay events. It can be used an unlimited number of times - so feel free to share it as much as you want - but please note it will expire on March 31, 2018. A price increase is slated for tomorrow at midnight so now is the best time to register!
