A few months ago I was given an opportunity to register for a race, a rather big race, and I could not pass it up. I registered under the radar and made no official announcement because part of me was unsure I made the right move. Yes, fear is a big component of this endeavor I now embarq on. I have, in fact, registered for my first full marathon which will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Sunday, May 6, 2018.
DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon will celebrate it's 10th Anniversary this year so it will be extra special to be able to run my first full marathon in an atmosphere that will no doubt have some stellar energy. I will also hopefully get to meet my running buddy Cody since he and his family live not far from where the marathon will take place. Oh, and it just happens to be the home stand for my favorite hockey team so I am hoping to see some popular Pittsburgh Penguin sights while I am in town for race weekend as well. In all, it ended up being the perfect place and time for me to run a race that I know will challenge me both mentally and physically. Then again, the last two years have pushed me in ways I never expected so I know I can handle this now more than ever before.
I won't just be training for the full marathon, however. I saw a post on Facebook for the marathon that they were seeking official bloggers for the race and decided to enter an application. I thought it was a long shot but I was THRILLED when I got the email saying that I was selected to share my training journey as one of ten official bloggers. I will be sharing my choices or fueling, hydration, and nutrition with you over the course of the next six months*. I will also be sharing a very special blog post in February on how your family and friends can take part in your training as well as on race day.
As part of that I was able to register or the 5K race on Saturday, May 5th and take part in the Steel Challenge. This will mean I will get three medals after all is said and done. Hooray! Training officially began for me this past weekend and I am nervous yet excited about what the next 19 weeks will hold for me. I am using the Galloway method for now and hope to get myself marathon ready in no time at all. Surely there will be ups and downs but I have a lot of people rooting for me so I know in the end it will be a phenomenal experience. It has long been a goal of mine to finish a full marathon since I completed my first half marathon in 2012. It looks like 2018 is going to be a fantastic year!
